What is Umrah Al Badal?

Umrah Al Badal refers to the practice of performing Umrah on behalf of another person who is unable to undertake the minor pilgrimage themselves. It is a concept that allows individuals to fulfill the religious obligation of Umrah on behalf of someone else, typically due to reasons such as illness, old age, physical incapacity, or any other valid constraint, according to Islamic Shariah Law.

The term "Al Badal" in Arabic means "substitution" or "in lieu of." Therefore, Umrah Al Badal can be understood as the substitutionary performance of Umrah for someone who is unable to do it themselves. The person undertaking the Umrah Al Badal assumes the responsibility and intention of performing the minor pilgrimage on behalf of the individual they are representing.

Umrah Al Badal is seen as a compassionate act, providing an opportunity for individuals who are unable to physically partake in the journey to still receive the spiritual rewards and blessings associated with Umrah. It is considered a virtuous deed and an act of kindness towards others, reflecting the importance of solidarity and unity within the Muslim community.

When performing Umrah Al Badal, it is customary for the person undertaking the minor pilgrimage on behalf of another (the "proxy") to fulfill all the necessary rites and rituals of Umrah with sincerity and devotion. This includes entering the state of Ihram, performing Tawaf around the Kaaba, and completing the Sa'i between Safa and Marwah, with at the end "Halq" — the act of shaving the entire head — and "Taqsir" — trimming the hair on the head by at least an inch. Performing Halq or Taqsir is the wajib (obligatory) act that must be performed in order to leave the state of Ihram. The intention throughout the process is to fulfill the religious duty on behalf of the person they are representing.

For Whom Is Umrah Al Badal Performed?

Umrah Al Badal can be performed on behalf of various individuals who are unable to undertake the minor pilgrimage themselves due to valid reasons. Here are some examples of who Umrah Al Badal can be performed for, according to Islamic law:

1. Elderly individuals who may face physical limitations that prevent them from undertaking the journey.

2. People with chronic illnesses or medical conditions that make it challenging or risky for them to travel.

3. Those who are temporarily incapacitated due to injury or illness.

4. Parents, relatives, or loved ones who have passed away and were unable to perform Umrah during their lifetime. In this case, Umrah Al Badal is performed as a form of offering supplication and seeking blessings for the deceased.

5. Individuals who are unable to obtain the necessary travel documentation or face legal restrictions that prevent them from travelling to Makkah.

Is It Permissible to Perform Umrah Al Badal on Behalf of Prophet Muhammad, Other Prophets, and the Sahaba May Allah Be Pleased with Them?

Performing Umrah, including Tawaf and other acts of worship, on behalf of Rasulullah ï·º, other Prophets, and the Sahaba is permissible. By undertaking this noble responsibility, one can attain great rewards. It is crucial, however, to ensure that the intention is made for one person only during each Ihram. Mixing intentions for multiple individuals during the same Ihram is not considered valid and may render the Umrah incorrect.

How Do I Enter into Ihram for Umrah on Behalf of Someone Else?

To enter into Ihram for Umrah for someone else, let's take the example of performing Umrah on behalf of Rasulullah. The person making the intention would do so as follows: "I am entering into Ihram for Umrah and reciting the Talbiyah on behalf of Rasulullah." After making this intention, the Umrah will be performed without making any additional intentions for other acts to be performed on his behalf.

Are There Any Specific Hadiths Regarding Performing Umrah for Someone Else?

Yes, there are specific Hadiths that highlight the permissibility and virtue of performing Umrah on behalf of others.

Abdullah ibn Abbas narrated:

A woman from the tribe of Khath'am said, "O Allah's Messenger! My father is an old man and cannot perform Hajj and Umrah, nor can he sit firmly on the camel. Can I perform Hajj and Umrah on his behalf?" The Prophet replied, "Yes, you may perform Hajj and Umrah on his behalf. Don't you think that if your father had a debt, you would pay it off for him? Fulfill the obligations of your parents, for they are amongst your best opportunities (to earn rewards)." (Abu Dawood)

Abdullah ibn Abbas narrated:

The Prophet Muhammad said, "Whoever performs Hajj for Allah's sake and does not have sexual relations with his wife, and does not do evil or sins then he will return (after Hajj free from all sins) as if he were born anew." The companions asked, "O Allah's Messenger! Should we perform Hajj every year?" He replied, "If you have the means to do so, then yes. And whoever performs Umrah on behalf of his parents, or performs Umrah on behalf of one of them, then he should fulfill their pledges and debts, and Allah will record a good deed for him for every step he takes."
